痴呆症是由绝大部分脑细胞被破坏引起的。引起痴呆症的原因大概有70多种，但还没找到最根本的原因。痴呆症有两种类型，一种是阿氏痴呆症(Alzheimer’s Disease)，另一种是血管性痴呆症(Vascular Dementia)。
血管性痴呆症(Vascular Dementia)易发生在50岁以上的中老年人群中，一般易发生在患脑血管疾患、心脏疾患、糖尿病等的高危人群中。患有血管性痴呆症(Vascular Dementia)的人，在发病时会有突然哭或突然笑等奇怪的症状出现，更为严重的还会出现行动障碍。如脑部血管同时发生梗塞的话，则易引起语言障碍、行动障碍、空间障碍、知觉障碍等。此类痴呆症的初期表现一般是伴随健忘症、忧郁症、记忆障碍等。有脑血管疾患或脑血管性痴呆的症状时，通过CT或MRI可以查出来。
